Help clients better understand their executive functioning strengths and challenges with this simple, approachable handout.

Executive functioning can be a complicated concept to explain—especially when clients already feel frustrated, overwhelmed, or like they’re simply “bad” at certain tasks. This resource breaks executive functioning down into 10 easy-to-understand domains using brief, client-friendly descriptions.

Domains include working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibition control, emotional control, planning and organization, time management, self-monitoring, focus and attention, task initiation, and goal-directed persistence.

The handout uses a strengths-based approach, reminding clients that everyone has a different executive functioning profile and that these are skills that can be developed—not measures of whether someone is trying hard enough.

The second page includes brief reflection prompts that invite clients to identify their current strengths, areas that feel particularly difficult, and strategies that help when they get stuck.

Great for: individual therapy, ADHD and neurodivergent-affirming work, psychoeducation, treatment planning conversations, adolescents and adults, and helping clients put language to executive functioningdifficulties.

Includes: 2-page PDF handout with executive functioning domain overview and reflection questions.
